Bonsai Tree Soil
Already Mixed Bonsai Tree Soil
Buying a pre-mixed Bonsai Tree Soil can be a much quicker and easier solution for people who are less experienced with the art of Bonsai Tree Care.
There will be a plentiful supply and range of Bonsai Tree soil for you to choose from and I can say in all honesty there is no real best choice soil for your Bonsai Tree apart from contacting your local supplier and asking for their advice on your particular Bonsai Tree. Do some experimenting with different soils and see which one your own Bonsai Tree responds the best to.
Things To Consider When Choosing Soil
Two things will be uppermost in your mind when you are selecting the correct soil for your Bonsai Tree. Firstly you will be looking for some soil that has the capability to drain quickly so the roots do not rot. Bonsai Trees are very sensitive to any moisture and need some natural gasses to grow strong and healthy.
I have listed some of the more commercial and brand name soils below.
Quality soils and brand names such as Akadama, Fujiyama, Kyodama, and Kiryu.
Akadama soil is imported from japan and used for Bonsai Trees for both its chemical composition and also its texture. This soil is quite grained and not too powdery in appearance. Akadama can also be used for decorative purposes as a topping and also as a potting soil for your Bonsai Trees.
Akadama soil provides the perfect combination of water and air for your Bonsai Tree.
It also has the benefits of having a neatral PH-Ph 6-5-9 and retains the perfect amount of water due to its connection with the volcanic mountains in its country of origin and it also tells you when to water as the colour of the soil changes from reddish brown to a dark yellow colour.
This particular soil will work well with most of the Bonsai Tree family and in particular will work very well with the Azalea variety.
Kyodama Soil
You will have to look quite hard to find this particular Bonsai Tree soil as it is not as readily available as some of the other Bonsai Tree soils.
This one works quite well as a top dressing for your Bonsai Trees.
Some people in various online Bonsai Tree forums are touting this soil as the next big thing in Bonsai Tree soils but I would be inclined to disagree for my own personal reasons but if you can get hold of it for your own Bonsai Trees please do give it a go as it is still a good quality soil.
Kiryu
Kiryu soil is a mixture of clay and pumice which makes it quite well suited to growing certain types of Bonsai Trees such as conifers, evergreens and also the pine variety. This soil could be used as is or could also be mixed with normal soil.
This type of soil is a great soil for getting a very healthy rootball.
Kanuma Soil
This soil is considered to be just common dirt in japan as it is found in peoples rear gardens. It is ideal for Bonsai Trees that tend to like more of an acid level than most other Bonsai Trees. It can also be used as is or be mixed with other Bonsai Tree soils to enrich the content. Some of the other Bonsai Trees that like this particular soil are Azalea, Camellias and Gardenias.
Fujiyama Soil
This soil is quite difficult to get hold of even on the internet, it is used mainly for early plant growth and early potting of your Bonsai Tree. You may want to use a micronutriant product with this soil for best results.
Soil Variables For Consideration
Firstly as you will be aware there are many different types of soil available to grow your Bonsai Trees in, you must take into account the specific type of Bonsai Tree that you will be growing. Most Bonsai Tree soils will do the same job as one another but as explained earlier ther will be certain types of Bonsai Trees that will require more specific types of soil in order to get the very best nutrients for your Bonsai Tree Care.
For example you should not feed your Azalea Bonsai Tree when it is bloom.
What is the right soil for my bonsai tree ?
Those of you who have already tried to grow or maintain a Bonsai Tree will be very familiar with the concept that the soil you use to grow your Bonsai Trees in is crucial for success. Do not use normal plant soil for your Bonsai Tree as this works in a completely different way in which we require our Bonsai Tree soil to act. Normal soil will capture the moisture from water that is poured onto it and then the tree or plant can drink its full. On the other hand the Bonsai Tree soil is made to be loose and drain quicker so that the Bonsai Tree doesn’t drown or suffer any root rot. This is very important in regards to the Bonsai Tree being able to reach full maturity and growth.
Can I Make My Own Soil ?
The short answer to this question is “yes” you can indeed make your own Bonsai Tree soil it is not that difficult to do but you will have to stick to a specific recipe of which I will provide below.
1 part “loam
2 parts sphagnum peat moss
2 parts of granite grit
If you have any problems sourcing these materials I would advise you to contact your local Bonsai Tree specialist or even your local garden centre for help and advice, however I have found Amazon to be an excellent source for many of my own quality Bonsai Tree Care supplies.
